Notes:
Large whiteboards are fantastic for organizing your thoughts, but the price is not so nice. This project gives you a very large surface to work with, but it does have the drawback that it is not magnetic.
I think that the surface treatment may bear further investigation. WD-40 was designed as a "Water Displacement" treatment, my theory behind including the Rain-X was that hydrophobic coatings could make it easy to wipe off the dry erase markers. I think that idea has merit and I am going to investigate some of their other products including the original.
WD-40 also has some other products including their silicone line. Would that provide any improvements? I hope to find the time to keep up testing on my off-cut.
